Shepherd Softball Takes Pair from Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Shepherd University (10-11, 5-5 PSAC East) swept a doubleheader with Mansfield (3-15, 0-10 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at Mansfield on Monday. Shepherd gained a 7-0 win in game one and added a 10-2 victory in five innings in the nightcap.
 
The Rams took a 2-0 lead in the third inning in game one as junior infielder Cate Russian (Manassas, Va./Colgan) singled and freshman infielder Hailey Putnam (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) followed with a two-run blast.
 
Shepherd added four runs in the fourth behind an RBI-double from junior catcher Madelyn Chambers (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and a three-run homer from Russian.
 
The Rams closed out the scoring in the seventh with a solo homer from sophomore pinch-hitter Allison Gray (Berkeley Springs, W.Va./Berkeley Springs).
 
Sophomore designated player/pitcher Sam Colaw (Petersburg, W.Va./Petersburg), freshman outfielder Lexi McAllister (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon), Putnam, and Russian each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
 
Junior pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 8 K, 1 BB) (4-5) picked up the win. Colaw (3.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 K, 3 BB) earned the save (1). Britni Motter (3.2 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (2-9) took the loss.
 
The Rams took a 2-0 lead in the first in the nightcap. Russian doubled and scored on a double by Putnam. Putnam later scored from third when sophomore outfielder Haylee Hartman (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro) was caught stealing.
 
Shepherd added a run in the second on an RBI-single by Russian and two more in the third to take a 5-0 advantage.
 
The Mountaineers got a run in the fourth as Rachel Sherman doubled and later scored on a passed ball.
 
Shepherd scored five runs on four hits in the fifth to take a 10-1 lead. Putnam had a two run-double to key the rally.
 
Mansfield added a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-single off the bat of Liliana Moyer.
 
Russian went 3-for-4 to lead an 11-hit attack for the Rams. Putnam and Hartman each added a pair of hits.
 
Senior pitcher Natalee Harvey (St. Albans, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union/Kutztown) (4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 K, 5 BB) (4-3) earned the win. Reilly Storer (2.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 K, 4 BB) (0-4) took the loss.
 
The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to West Chester for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
