Shepherd Baseball Splits with Kutztown

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Shepherd University (24-13, 11-5 PSAC East) split with Kutztown (14-17, 5-11 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams gained a 9-2 triumph in game one and dropped a 7-6 decision in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one with a two-run double by redshirt junior designated-hitter Wyatt Lamb (Asbury, W.Va./Mt. Calvary Christian School (Pa.) keying the rally. 

The Rams took a 4-0 lead in the second when freshman infielder Andrew O'Brien (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) singled and later scored on a throwing error. 

Kutztown plated one in the fourth when Michael Burns singled and later scored on a single off the bat of Bryce Shafer. 

Redshirt sophomore designated-hitter Ryan Fluharty (Burton, W.Va./Morgantown/USC Upstate) hit a two-run blast in the fourth to give Shepherd a 6-1 advantage.

The Rams took a 9-1 lead in the fifth highlighted by a two-run homer from senior first baseman Nik Rubendall (East Norriton, Pa./Pope John Paul II).

Kutztown scored one in the seventh when Aiden Soumas singled and later scored on a Jared Ferguson single.

Lamb had two hits with two runs and a pair of RBI to pace the Rams. 

Senior pitcher Allen Miller (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) (7.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 8 K, 3 BB) (4-2) earned the win. Kannon  Zdimal (4.1 IP, 7 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 7 K, 3 BB) (4-3) took the loss.

Kutztown took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap highlighted by a Ferguson run-scoring double and an RBI-single from Michael Burns.

Shepherd tied the game at 2-2 in the first on a two-run blast from Lamb. 

The Rams took a 3-2 lead in the second when junior third baseman Nathaniel Brookshire (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) walked and later scored on a single from Pullen.

The Golden Bears scored two in the fifth on a two-run homer from Nick Varda. 

The Rams gained a 6-4 lead in the fifth on a solo homer from Rubendall.

Kutztown rallied with three runs in the seventh to get the win.  Run-scoring singles from Drew Wheeler and Preston Warne keyed the scoring.

Rubendall went 2-for-3 with two runs to pace the Rams.

Varda went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and batted in a pair to pace Kutztown.

Zack Wertman (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) (3-2) earned the win. Jeremy Fallon (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB) earned the save (4). Junior pitcher Cooper Bryan (Chester Springs, Pa./Malvern Prep) (0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss. 

The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to West Chester for a  1 p.m. doubleheader.
