Shepherd Softball Sweeps Millersville; Gains PSAC Tournament Bid

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Shepherd University (23-21, 15-15 PSAC East) swept a doubleheader with Millersville (21-31, 8-24 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at Millersville on Saturday. The Rams posted a 4-2 win in game one and added a 9-3 victory in the nightcap. The Rams finish the regular season as the fourth seed in the Eastern Division.
 
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as sophomore outfielder Haylee Hartman (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro) singled and later scored on a single by sophomore designated player Sam Colaw (Petersburg, W.Va./Petersburg).
 
The Marauders answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Jocelyn Langer singled and later scored on a wild pitch. Hailey Watlington doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carly Vaughan.
 
The Rams plated three runs in the second behind RBI-singles from junior first baseman Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) and sophomore infielder Jordan Gugliuzza (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) and a sacrifice fly from Hartman.
               
Colaw, Gugliuzza, Hartman, and freshman outfielder Lexi McAllister (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
 
Vaughan went 2-for-2 for the Marauders.
 
Junior pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 9 K, 0 BB) (14-7) earned the complete game win. Nicolina Pezzone (7.0 IP, 11 H, 3 R, 4 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (2-12) took the loss.
 
Millersville took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on an RBI-double from Lexi Pickett.
 
Allyson Black singled and later scored on a passed ball in the second to give the Marauders a 2-0 advantage.
 
Shepherd tied the game in the third on a two-run single off the bat of Collis.
 
The Rams scored four runs in the fifth to take a 6-2 advantage. Hartman hit a solo blast, freshman infielder Hailey Putnam (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) hit an RBI-double, and sophomore outfielder Payton Weaver (Fairplay, Md./Williamsport) smacked an RBI-single to highlight the scoring.
 
Watlington hit an RBI-single in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-3.
 
Shepherd added three runs in the sixth on an RBI-double by Collis and a two-run homer from Colaw in the sixth to complete the scoring.
 
Collis, Hartman, and Weaver each had three hits to lead a 14-hit attack for the Rams.
 
Colaw (6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (2-3) earned the win. Delaney Troxell (4.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (15-14) took the loss.
 
The Rams return to action on Wednesday for first round PSAC Tournament action against a yet to be determined opponent at 10 a.m. at Grand Slam Park in Binghamton, N.Y.
