#17 Shepherd Women Top West Virginia State in Season Opener; Meals Has Successful Debut

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- The 17th-ranked Shepherd University women's soccer team scored three unanswered goals en route to a 3-1 win over West Virginia State in non-conference women's soccer action at Shepherd on Thursday. First-year head coach Bob Meals was successful in his debut for the Rams.

The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead when Rachel Okoro scored at the 36:17 mark.

Shepherd tied the game at the 44:47 mark when senior midfielder Natalie Zambrano (Germantown, Md./Northwest/Montgomery College) scored on a pass from junior midfielder Olivia Gardner (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point).

The Rams took a 2-1 lead when junior forward Merritt Delk (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) scored on a feed from senior midfielder Reagan Ackermann (Myersville, Md./Middletown/UNC Wilmington) at the 50:07 mark.

Shepherd scored the game's final goal when sophomore defender/midfielder Aniyah Parker (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) scored on an assist from redshirt sophomore defender Morgen Smith (Clarksburg, Md./Poolesville/Radford) at the 65:48 mark.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Alex Stuart (New Market, Md./Linganore/Eastern Kentucky) (90:00, 1 GA, 0 saves) recorded the win in goal for the Rams. Celina Seggleman recorded one save for the Yellow Jackets.

Shepherd had a 10-7 edge in shots with a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Rams had a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Mansfield for a 1 p.m. contest.
