SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Shepherd University volleyball team (2-0) opened the season with a pair of wins at the Ram Rumble on Friday at the Butcher Center. The Rams gained a 25-22, 25-22, 25-17 win in the early match against Shaw and added a 25-26, 25-13, 25-16 win over Goldey-Beacom in the later match.
Sophomore outside hitter
Mikayla Riehl (Birdsboro, Pa./Twin Valley) led the Rams against Shaw with nine kills, nine digs, and a .409 attack percentage. Sophomore right side
Emily Ryder (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) added five kills.
Junior setter
Maggie Smith (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland/Loyola (Md.)) contributed 17 assists,
while freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist
Vitoria Villa (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) recorded a match-best 10 digs.
Kamaria Sanders had five kills to lead the Bears. Justus Alexander added 10 assists and six digs.
Senior outside hitter
Amya Davis (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) paced Shepherd against Goldey Beacom with 10 kills and a .692 attack percentage. Riehl added nine kills, while senior middle hitter
Rylee Lenz (Earleville, Md./Bohemia Manor) had eight.
Smith recorded 31 assists and 10 digs. Freshman libero/defensive specialist
Alexa Smith (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) had 10 digs, while Villa had nine.
Kelci Gingras had five kills and five digs for the Lightning. Juliana Malena added nine digs and seven assists.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Chestnut Hill at 1 p.m. and Frostburg State at 7 p.m.
