Shepherd Football Topples Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va.  – Junior quarterback Jeff Ziemba (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) completed 14-of-21 passes for 217 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Shepherd University to a 41-14 win over Fairmont State in MEC football action at Fairmont on Thursday night.

Shepherd improves to 9-0, 9-0 in conference play, while Fairmont State falls to 5-4, 5-4.

Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when junior running back Jabre Lolley (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) scored on a six-yard run with 9:10 left in the first quarter.

Lolley scored on a one-yard run out of the Wildcat formation with 3:58 left in the first quarter to increase the lead to 13-0.

The score was setup by an 83-yard interception return by junior cornerback Adam Coles (Oxon Hill, Md./Potomac).

Fairmont State cut the lead to 13-7 when Cooper Hibbs teamed with Brandon Boyd on a 27-yard scoring pass with 10:37 left in the second quarter.

Shepherd took a 20-7 lead when Ziemba fired a 15-yard scoring strike to sophomore wide receiver Angelo Jean-Louis (Wellington, Fla./Palm Beach Central/Fork Union/Marshall) with 8:32 left in the second quarter.

Senior running back Allen Cross (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) rambled 72 yards for a touchdown with 6:00 left in the second quarter to up the Shepherd lead to 27-7.

Junior defensive back Tre Sullivan (Accokeek, Md./Gwynn Park) picked up a punt that was blocked by Jean-Louis and ran 15 yards for a score with 2:19 left in the half as Shepherd took a 34-7 lead into the break.

Ziemba fired a 23-yard scoring strike to junior wide receiver Billy Brown (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) with 19 seconds left in the third quarter to extend the lead to 41-7.

Hibbs teamed with Boyd on a 22-yard scoring pass with 14:10 left in the fourth quarter.

Hibbs completed 16-of-38 passes for 204 yards for the Falcons.

Brown paced the Rams with seven receptions for 145 yards. Boyd had 10 catches for 142 yards to lead Fairmont.

Cross had 17 carries for a game-high 118 yards to lead the Shepherd ground game. Lolley added six carries for 49 yards. Austin White rushed 18 times for 73 yards for the Falcons.

Shepherd gained 401 yards of total offense while Fairmont totaled 252. Shepherd limited Fairmont to 48 rushing yards. The Rams had seven sacks on the night.

Junior defensive back CJ Davis (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) had five solo tackles and a pair of pass breakups to lead the Ram defense. Jerry Iweh had a game-high eight tackles (seven solos) for the Falcons.

The Rams return to action next Saturday when they host Urbana at noon for Senior Day/Military Appreciation Day.

Notes: Ryan Earls (282) had five points on the night to become the Shepherd all-time leading kick-scorer … he passed the old mark of 280 set by Eric Dobratz (2008-11) … Brown had his sixth 100-yard receiving effort this year as he tied the mark set by Jason Dirting in 2001.
