SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore guard
Skyler Roman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) had game highs of 28 points, 14 rebounds, and eight assists to lead Shepherd University (15-11, 10-10 MEC) to an 89-72 win over West Virginia State (6-19, 4-16 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Roman hit on 10-of-21 field goal attempts with a 6-of-11 effort from three-point range. He sunk 2-of-2 free throws. He added seven rebounds and three assists.
Sophomore guard
Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 20 points, while senior forward
Ryan McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Presbyterian) had 18 points and seven boards.
Junior guard
Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, Md./North Point) contributed 15 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.
Frank Webb scored 27 points to pace the Yellow Jackets. Keith Harris added 15 points, while Cody Morris and Markee Mazyck each added 13 points.
Shepherd had a 34-29 lead at halftime behind 15 first half points from Muhammad.
Shepherd took control of the contest with an 11-0 run midway through the second half to take a 20-point lead at 66-46 after a three-pointer by Davis with 8:48 remaining.
Shepherd shot 39.8 percent (33-83) from the floor with a 37.2 percent (16-43) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 7-of-8 free throws (87.5 percent). West Virginia State shot 39.7 percent (25-63) from the floor with a 29 percent (9-31) effort from beyond the arc. The Yellow Jackets sunk 13-of-19 free throws (68.4 percent).
State had a 46-45 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 15 turnovers and committed just five.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 7:30 p.m. game.
Notes: Shepherd honored the 1975-76 NCAA III South Atlantic Region champion team basketball team during the game … that squad posted a 33-3 mark to record the most wins of any collegiate team that season … today's win assured the Rams of a winning season.
