Shepherd Men’s Basketball Runs Past West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Junior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and sophomore guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) each scored 16 points to lead Shepherd University (2-4, 1-2 MEC) to an 82-64 win over West Virginia Wesleyan (0-7, 0-3 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night.

Burgess hit on 6-of-7 field goals and drained 4-of-9 free throws. Lang connected on 4-of-8 field goals with an 8-of-10 performance from the foul line.

Shepherd had five players in doubles figures as junior guard Derek McKnight (Teaneck, NJ/Gaston (N.C.) Day School/Louisburg CC) had 13 points, while senior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) and senior forward Gavin McTavish (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll/Bridgton Academy) each tossed in 12. McKnight also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Senior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) added nine points, six boards, and tied Lang with a game-high five assists.

Luka Petrovic had 16 points and Kevin Kangi added 10 for the Bobcats. Luke Layhew grabbed a game-high nine boards.

Shepherd shot 50 percent (12-of-24) from the floor en route to a 33-25 lead at halftime.

The Rams led by as many as 27 points in the second half. Shepherd maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the half.

Shepherd connected on 50 percent (26-52) from the floor with a 38.5 percent (5-13) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 71.4 percent (25-35) of their free throws.

West Virginia Wesleyan shot 40.7 percent (24-59) from the floor with a 25 percent effort (6-24) from three-point range. The Bobcats shot 83.3 percent (10-12) from the charity stripe.

Shepherd had a 35-28 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 13 turnovers and committed just eight.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Glenville State for a 4 p.m. contest.
