SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior forward AJ Carr (Fairfax, Va./St. James School) scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Shepherd University to an 85-71 win over UVa-Wise in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Carr hit on 9-of-14 field goals with a 1-of-2 effort from three-point range. He was 2-of-3 from the charity stripe. Carr posted his seventh double-double of the season.
Junior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) added 19 points on a perfect shooting effort. He was 8-of-8 from the floor with a 3-of-3 performance from the foul line.
Senior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) added 15 points, while sophomore guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) tossed in 11.
Yesid-Mosquera-Perea and Michal Seals each scored 17 points to lead the Highland Cavaliers (6-8, 4-4 MEC). Seals also had a game-high six assists. Chance Steffey added 16 points.
Shepherd (8-6, 4-4 MEC) had a 42-36 lead at the break behind 15 first-half points from Carr.
Shepherd led by as many as 15 points early in the second half, but UVa-Wise rallied to within nine points at 70-61 after a three-pointer by DeMarcus Edwards with 5:42 remaining. The Rams proceeded on a 9-0 run to open up an 18-point lead at 79-61 after a dunk by Burgess with 2:42 left.
Shepherd connected on 60.4 percent (32-53) from the floor with a 38.1 percent (8-21) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 81.3 percent (13-16) of their free throws.
UVa-Wise shot 39.7 percent (27-68) from the floor with a 33.3 percent effort (12-36) from three-point range. The Cavaliers shot 62.5 percent (5-8) from the charity stripe.
Shepherd had a 38-29 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced five turnovers and committed 11.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Notre Dame for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
