AIKEN, S.C. – Shepherd University (1-5) used a 14-hit attack en route to a 13-7 win over USC Aiken (4-1) in baseball action at USC Aiken on Saturday.
The Rams took a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Sophomore outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) had a two-run single, while sophomore shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) and junior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) each added RBI-singles.
Shepherd took a 9-0 lead with five runs in the third. Sophomore second baseman Eric Sloper (Catlett, Va./Patriot), and Burgreen each had two-run singles, while senior first baseman Daniel Heleine (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville/WVU) drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk.
The Pacers got a pair of runs in the fourth on an RBI-double by Joey Smithers and an RBI-single by Brian Parreira.
USC Aiken added four more runs in the fifth with a two-run homer by Jose Bonilla keying the rally.
Shepherd increased its lead to 10-6 in the sixth as Atkinson singled and later scored on a double off the bat of junior designated hitter Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC).
The Pacers narrowed the lead to 10-7 with a run in the seventh. Nile Goings struck out and reached on a passed ball. He later scored on a wild pitch.
The Rams added a pair of runs in the eighth behind a two-run single by senior third baseman Chase Hoffman (Middletown, Md./Middletown).
Shepherd's final tally came in the ninth as Burgreen doubled and scored on a single by Atkinson.
Atkinson went 4-for-5 and Burgreen added a 3-for-5 effort to lead the Rams.
Joey Smithers and Bonilla each had three hits for the Pacers.
Junior starter Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (5.0 IP, 12 H, 6 ER, 7 K, 1 BB) (1-1) gained the win for the Rams. Junior reliever Colin Benner (Clear Brook, Va./Millbrook) (4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 8 K, 2 BB) notched the save. Hunter Shuff (0-1) (2.0 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) took the loss for the Pacers.
The Rams return to action on Feb. 24 when they travel to Virginia State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
