Strong Second Half Lifts Shepherd Men Past Charleston

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior guard Steffen Davis (Accokeek, Md./Maret School) and sophomore guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) each scored 16 points to lead Shepherd University (16-10, 12-8 MEC) to a 75-59  win over Charleston (14-12, 10-10 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.

Davis connected on 6-of-12 field goals with a 4-of-9 effort from three-point range. He added four assists and three steals. Lang hit on 4-of-14 field goals with a 1-of-8 effort from beyond the arc. He was 7-of-8 from the line. Lang also dished out a game-high five assists.

Junior guard  Derek McKnight (Teaneck, NJ/Gaston (N.C.) Day School/Louisburg CC) added 14 points, while junior guard Devin Smith Baltimore, Md./Randallstown/Richard Bland CC) tossed in 11. Junior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) contributed eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Keir Anderson scored a game-high 19 points for the Golden Eagles. Austin Howard added 13 points, while Lamont McManus had 10.

Charleston had a 33-26 lead at halftime behind 17 first-half points from Anderson.

Shepherd took the lead for good in the second half when Smith hit a jumper with 13:34 left. Charleston got to within six points at 53-47 after a three-pointer by Howard with 7:48 remaining, but would get no closer.

Shepherd connected on 43.6 percent (24-55) from the floor with a 31.3 percent (10-32) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 85 percent (17-20) of their free throws.

Charleston shot 40.4 percent (19-47) from the floor with a 32 percent effort (8-25) from three-point range. The Golden Eagles shot 65 percent (13-20) from the charity stripe.

Shepherd had a 35-30 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 14 turnovers and committed seven.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Glenville State for a 7:30 p.m. game.
