Shepherd Men Upset Concord

ATHENS, W.Va.  –  Senior guard Derek McKnight (Teaneck, NJ/Gaston (N.C.) Day School/Louisburg CC) scored 25 points and junior guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) added 21 to lead Shepherd University (8-5, 4-3 MEC) to a 90-74 win over Concord (9-3, 5-2 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at Concord on Thursday night.

McKnight was 7-of-16 from the floor with a 1-of-4 effort from three-point range. He drained 10-of-10 free throws. Lang hit on 7-of-16 field goals with a 4-of-11 performance from beyond the arc. He was 3-of-3 from the line. Lang grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and four assists, while McKnight added five assists and five rebounds.

Freshman guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) added 15 points, while sophomore forward Kyle Daggett (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville)  added career highs of 12 points and eight rebounds.

Tommy Bolte had a game-high 42 points to lead Concord. He was 15-of-28 from the floor with a 3-of-9 performance from beyond the arc. He was 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.

Concord had a 34-33 lead at the half behind 16 first-half points from Bolte.

Shepherd opened the second half on a 17-6 run to take a 50-40 lead with 13:29 left. Concord would cut the deficit to seven points at 50-43 after a three-point play by Bolte with 13:17 remaining, but would get no closer.

Shepherd connected on 47.1 percent (33-70) from the floor with a 29.2 percent (7-24) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 89 percent (17-19) of their free throws.

Concord shot 39.7 percent (25-63) from the floor with a 19.2 percent effort (5-26) from three-point range. The Mountain Lions shot 79.2 percent (19-24) from the charity stripe.

Concord had a 41-38 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 12 turnovers and committed four.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to UVA-Wise for a 4 p.m. contest.
