SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior forward Winston Burgess (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) scored a game-high 27 points to lead Shepherd University (10-6, 4-4 MEC) to a 78-66 win over Urbana (5-9, 3-7 MEC) in MEC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Burgess connected 11-of-12 field goals with a 5-of-6 effort from free throw line. Burgess also tied Urbana's Datrey Long for game-high rebounding honors with six.
Junior guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) added 20 points and a game-high four assists. Freshman guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) and senior guard Derek McKnight (Teaneck, NJ/Gaston (N.C.) Day School/Louisburg CC) each added nine points.
Matt Treacy scored 21 points to pace the Blue Knights. Long added 13 points.
Urbana had a 35-31 lead at halftime.
The game featured 12 lead changes and 10 ties.
Shepherd took the lead for good at 55-53 when Preston drained a three-pointer off a feed from senior guard Devin Smith (Baltimore, Md./Randallstown/Richard Bland CC) with 8:46 remaining.
Shepherd connected on 58 percent (29-50) from the floor with a 50 percent (6-12) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 77.8 percent (14-18) of their free throws.
Urbana shot 42.2 percent (27-64) from the floor with a 37.5 percent effort (9-24) from three-point range. The Blue Knights shot 100 percent (3-3) from the charity stripe.
Shepherd had a 37-24 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced seven turnovers and committed 12.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
Thomas Lang had 20 points and four assists.
