SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Devin Robinson had game highs of 21 points and eight rebounds to lead University of Charleston to a 71-60 win over Shepherd University in the season opener for both schools at the Clarion Hotel Conference Challenge in men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Friday night.
Senior guard Thomas Lang (New Market, Md./Linganore) scored 11 points and handed out four assists to pace the Rams.
Junior guard Jarrell Jones (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg/Alderson Broaddus) and sophomore guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) each added 10 points. Preston also tied junior guard Cam Stephens (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) for team-high rebounding honors with six.
Drew Rackley added 14 points, while Lamont McManus tossed in 11 for the Golden Eagles.
Shepherd connected on 40 percent (22-55) from the floor with a 21.1 percent (4-19) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit on 70.6 percent 12-17) of their free throws.
Charleston shot 56.4 percent (31-55) from the floor with a 40 percent effort (6-15) from three-point range. The Golden Eagles shot 42.9 percent (3-7) from the charity stripe.
Charleston had a 35-26 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 12 turnovers and committed 10.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Bowie State for a 6 p.m. contest.
