Shepherd Women’s Lacrosse Edged by Lincoln Memorial in Season Opener

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Amara Moss scored an unassisted goal with 8:08 remaining to lift Lincoln Memorial University (2-1) to a 10-9 win over Shepherd University (0-1) in women's lacrosse action at Ram Stadium in the season opener for the Rams on Saturday afternoon.

Junior midfielder Elishia Davis (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) led the Rams with three goals. Junior attacker/midfielder Lillian Funke (Hagerstown, Md./Boonsboro)  added two goals and two assists, while sophomore attacker Sidney Kelly (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) netted a pair of goals.

Junior midfielder Mallory Davila (Hollywood, Md./St. Mary's  Ryken) and freshman midfielder Maddison Young (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) added single tallies. Sophomore attacker Regan Brown (Reisterstown, Md./Manchester Valley) and junior attacker Emily Brown (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) each added assists.

Casey Kelly and Erin DePaul each had two goals and an assist for the Railsplitters.

Shepherd open the game with a 4-1 run only to see Lincoln Memorial net three straight tallies to tie the game. Funke scored an unassisted goal with 33 seconds left in the half to give Shepherd a 5-4 lead at the break.

The Railsplitters opened the second half with four consecutive goals, including two by Kelly Csenar, to take an 8-6 advantage.

Shepherd got a goal by Young at the 23:04 mark and another by Funke at the 19:28 mark to tie the game at 8-all. Casey Kelly scored for Lincoln Memorial at the 15:58 mark and Shepherd answered with a goal by Kelly with 13:37 left to set the stage for the game-winner by Moss.

Lincoln Memorial held a 29-27 edge in shots and a 14-7 advantage in draw controls. The Railsplitters held a 23-15 advantage in ground balls. Shepherd was 21-of-29 in clears, while Lincoln Memorial was 19-of-21.

Freshman goalkeeper Hailey Bennett (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) recorded 10 saves for the Rams, while Micayla Starnes posted 11 saves for the Railsplitters.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Shippensburg for a 4 p.m. contest.
