CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Shepherd University (14-8, 5-1 MEC) split with Charleston (10-9, 5-1 MEC) in MEC baseball doubleheader action at Charleston on Saturday. The Rams used a seven-run seventh inning en route to a 15-8 win in game one, while the Golden Eagles rallied for a 4-3 win in eight innings in the nightcap. The loss snapped Shepherd's 13-game win streak.
Shepherd seemed in control of game with a 7-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Charleston rallied with six runs to tie the game. Jordan Bailey had a three-run homer and Jack Brunetti added a two-run single to key the scoring.
Shepherd plated seven runs on no hits, seven walks and a hit-by-pitch in the top of the seventh to gain the win.
Senior first baseman Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's/Catonsville CC) went 3-for-4 with four RBIS and three runs scored to lead the Rams. Graduate student infielder Syeed Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel/Norfolk State) went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while junior outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) added a 2-for-3 effort with three runs scored and an RBI.
Drew Hailey and Hefner each had a pair of hits for the Golden Eagles.
Junior reliever Tyler Shorter (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) (0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (2-2) gained the win for the Rams. Taylor Itnyre (0.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (0-2) took the loss for the Golden Eagles.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap on an RBI-single by junior catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy).
Charleston tied the game in the third on a solo homer by Austin Hathaway.
Mahdi hits a two-run blast in the fourth to give the Rams a 3-1 advantage.
The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the sixth to tie the game at 3-all. Brunetti and Brice Arrington each drove in a run.
Charleston won the game with a run in the eighth as Gianfranco Morello walked and later scored on a single by Brunetti.
Senior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) and Mahdi each had two hits for the Rams.
Brunetti went 2-for-3 for the Golden Eagles.
Junior reliever Ryan Marketell (Webster, N.Y./Webster/Monroe CC) (1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss. Brandon Harris (8.0 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (2-1) earned the win for the Golden Eagles.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to West Virginia State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
