WHEELING, W.Va. – Shepherd University (25-10, 15-3 MEC) swept Wheeling Jesuit (8-25, 6-12 MEC) in MEC doubleheader baseball action at Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday. The Rams gained a 6-0 victory in game one and added a 10-3 win in the nightcap.
Shepherd plated three runs on four hits in the first inning in game one. Junior outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) and junior catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) each drove in a run to key the rally.
The Rams added two runs in the second behind RBI-doubles by junior shortstop Trenton Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) and Junior outfielder Justin Smith (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg/Hagerstown CC).\
Shepherd scored its final run in the third on an RBI-single by senior infielder Giovanni Torres (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township).
Hamel went 3-for-4 to pace the Rams.
Junior pitcher Mitchell Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./St. James School/UMBC) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 7 K, 1 BB) (5-1) earned the win for the Rams. Payton Faris (4.0 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (3-3) took the loss.
The Rams had 13 hits and three home runs in the nightcap victory.
Smith had a two-run homer in the first, Burgreen added a solo blast in the fourth, while senior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) belted a two-run blast in the sixth.
Sophomore outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School). went 3-for-5 to lead Shepherd. Graduate student infielder Syeed Mahdi (Odenton, Md./Arundel/Norfolk State) added a three-run double.
Hayden Hizer went 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs to pace the Cardinals.
Senior starter Ryan Potts (Owings, Md./Northern) (7.0 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 13 K, 2 BB) (5-2) earned the win for the Rams. Josh Bell (5.0 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 4 K, 5 BB) (0-5) took the loss.
The two teams are slated to return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Wheeling Jesuit.
