SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (29-10, 19-3 MEC) swept West Liberty (8-27, 7-15 MEC) in MEC doubleheader baseball action at Fairfax Field on Monday. The Rams rallied for a 6-5 win in game one and added a 13-1 win in the nightcap. Shepherd runs its winning streak to 10 games.
Cody Eckstein had an RBI-double in the first and a two-run blast in the third to give the Hilltoppers a 3-0 lead.
The Hilltoppers got an RBI-single from Colton Coss and a sacrifice fly by Bailey McGrath in the fourth to take a 5-0 advantage.
Shepherd got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. Sophomore outfielder Jared Carr (Martinsburg, W.Va./St. James School) hit a two-run single to key the rally.
Shepherd tied the game in the fifth with a pair of runs. Senior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) walked with the bases loaded and senior second baseman Giovanni Torres (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the runs.
Atkinson launched a solo homer to left in the seventh to give the Rams the come-from-behind win.
Sophomore designated hitter Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Coss and Eckstein each had three hits for the Hilltoppers.
Sophomore pitcher Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB) (4-3) earned the win for the Rams. Luke Nees (2.1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 0 K, 3 BB) (1-2) took the loss.
West Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap on a sacrifice fly by McGrath.
Shepherd tied the game on an RBI-single by senior catcher Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's/Catonsville CC) in the third.
The Rams broke the game open with six runs in the fourth and five in the fifth. Nottingham had a two-run single to key the fourth inning rally, while Atkinson had a solo homer and Smith smacked a three-run double to highlight the scoring in the fifth.
Nottingham went 3-for-3 and Smith added a 2-for-3 effort for the Rams. Redshirt-sophomore outfielder Kendall Jordan (Washington, D.C./Bishop McNamara) added a solo blast.
Junior pitcher Ryan Marketell (Webster, N.Y./Webster/Monroe CC) (5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 0 BB) (2-1) gained the win for the Rams. Mitch Viakley (3.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 2 K, 3 BB) (1-2) took the loss for the Hilltoppers.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Millersville for a 3 p.m. contest.
