SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shepherd University (23-10) used a 19-hit attack en route to a 23-10 win over Shippensburg (12-18) in non-conference baseball action at Shippensburg on Tuesday.
Junior catcher Christian Hamel (Pasadena, Md./IMG Academy) went 3-for-5 with six runs batted in and three runs scored and senior first baseman Eddie Nottingham (Windsor Mill, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's/Catonsville CC) added a 4-for-5 effort with four runs scored and drove in a pair of runs to pace the Rams. Hamel's three-run blast keyed a four-run fourth inning for the Rams.
Junior outfielder Brenton Doyle (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) added a 2-for-5 effort with four RBI and three runs scored. He had a solo blast in the fourth. The Rams also got a three-run homer from senior outfielder Nick Atkinson (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park/VCU) in the eighth.
Anthony Vavaroutsos went 3-for-6 for the Raiders. Justin Harden added a three-run homer.
Graduate student pitcher Mike Collins (Mercersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy/Mount St. Mary's) (5.0 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 6 K, 0 BB) (1-0) picked up the win for the Rams. Kyle Lysy (4.0 IP, 11 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (0-2) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Wheeling Jesuit for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
