SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Collin DiGalbo tossed a two-yard scoring pass to Tyler Borg with 13 seconds remaining to lift Kutztown (4-0, 1-0 PSAC East) to a 34-27 win over Shepherd (2-2, 0-1 PSAC East) in PSAC East football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when sophomore quarterback Tyson Bagent (Martinsburg, W,Va./Martinsburg) teamed with senior wide receiver Devin Phelps (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances) on an 11-yard scoring pass with 8:25 left in the first quarter. Junior kicker Hayden August-Scriven (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) added the extra point.
Shepherd increased its lead to 14-0 when Bagent fired a two-yard scoring strike to a well-covered senior wide receiver Dylan Brewer (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) with 3:28 left in the first quarter.
Kutztown cut the lead to 14-6 when Abdul-Hassan Neblett scored on an eight-yard run with 13:25 left in the second quarter. The extra point attempt was no good.
The Golden Bears added a score when DiGalbo tossed a 19-yard- scoring pass to former Ram Jack Pilkerton with 1:33 left in the second quarter to cut the lead to 14-12. A two-point pass attempt falied.
August-Scriven connected on a 35-yard field goal with 11 seconds left in the half to give the Rams a 17-12 lead going into the break.
Keagan Harvin scored on a three-yard run to give the Golden Bears a 20-17 lead after DiGalbo rushed for the two-point conversion with 9:14 left in the third quarter.
Shepherd retook the lead at 24-20 when Bagent teamed with junior wide receiver Jordan Washington (Suitland, Md./Forestville) on a 10-yard scoring strike with 5:01 left in the third quarter.
Kutztown answered back when DiGalbo teamed with Mason McElroy on a nine-yard score with 8:37 remaining in the fourth quarter to take a 27-24 lead.
August-Scriven booted a 31-yard field goal to tie the game with 3:17 remaining.
Bagent completed 41-of-52 passes for 385 yards and three scores. Bagent's 41 completions set a new Shepherd single-game mark eclipse his old mark of 36. DiGalbo completed 22-of-37 passes for 278 yards.
Junior running back Deonte Glover (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman/WVU) rushed 15 times for 40 yards to pace the Rams. Neblett rushed 16 times for a game-high 101 yards for Kutztown.
Brewer had 16 catches for a game-high 146 yards to pace the Shepherd receivers. His 16 catches tie the Shepherd single-game record set by Ryan Feiss against Glenville State in 2017. McElroy had six catches for 59 yards for the Golden Bears.
Shepherd had 457 yards of total offense, while Kutztown totaled 407 yards.
Junior defensive back Michael Blackman-Herbert (Gaithersburg, Md./Avalon) led the Rams with seven tackles (six solos). Shawn Turner-Ortiz recorded 16 tackles and had a pair of interceptions for the Golden Bears.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Lock Haven for a 6 p.m. game.
Devin Phelps had six receptions for 94 yards and a score.
Deonte Glover rushed for 40 yards on the day.
Tyson Bagent began the game with 19 consecutive pass completions.
