KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Shepherd University (15-4, 11-3 PSAC East) split a pair of games with Kutztown (16-4, 13-3 PSAC East) in PSAC softball doubleheader action at Kutztown on Saturday. The Golden Bears recorded an 8-2 win in game one while Shepherd posted a 10-2 victory in five innings in the nightcap to earn the split.
Junior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs to pace a 13-hit performance for the Rams in the nightcap win.
Freshman pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) (4-0) gained the win for the Rams. Ruffner lost her no-hit bid in the fifth inning when Gillian Walsh led off with a single. A two-run double by Hannah Auvil spoiled a possible shutout effort. Sarah Harvey (2.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (4-2) took the loss for the Golden Bears.
Hannah Reimel hit a two-run single in the third inning in game one to give the Golden Bears the lead for good.
Alyssa Donato's three-run triple keyed a four-run fourth for Kutztown.
Sophomore designated player Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke) went 2-for-3 with a solo homer to pace the Rams.
Bridget Bailey (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) (9-0) gained the win for the Golden Bears. Sophomore pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (3.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (5-2) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Mansfield for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
