SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (18-7, 14-6 PSAC East) swept a pair of games with Millersville (15-9, 9-9 PSAC East) in PSAC softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Saturday. The Rams gained an 11-4 in game one and added a 3-2 triumph in the nightcap. The sweep gave Shepherd head coach Marissa Leslie her 100th career win.
Trailing 3-2 in the second, Shepherd plated four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-3 advantage. Senior shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills) had a three-run double and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore designated player Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke).
Millersville cut the lead to 6-4 with a run in the fifth as Faith Willenbrock scored when Savanna Kolenda walked with the bases loaded.
Shepherd added three runs in the fifth with a two-run double by junior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) keying the rally.
The Rams added a run in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Junior first baseman Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando), senior second baseman Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier), Burger and Purtell each had two hits for the Rams.
Junior pitcher Sarah Lamper (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) (7.0 IP, 2 H, 4 ER, 4 Ks, 9 BB) (6-3) gained the complete game win. Maddie Guinana (4.0 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (5-5) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the second inning in the nightcap behind RBI-singles from sophomore outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) and senior outfielder Allison Baker (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford).
Millersville tied the game on a two-run homer by Willenbrock in the sixth.
Shepherd scored the game-winner in the seventh as Purtell doubled and later scored on an error.
Willenbrock had a pair of hits to pace the Marauders.
Sophomore pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 7 K, 1 BB) (7-2) went the distance to earn the win. Morgan Crutcher (6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (6-4) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host West Chester for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Sara Cree Field.
