SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (23-8, 19-7 PSAC East) Lock Haven (8-14, 8-14 PSAC East) in PSAC softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Friday. The Rams earned an 8-4 win in game one and added a 9-1 win in five innings in the nightcap.
Lock Haven took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Haley Lestician reached on a fielder's choice and later scored when Kierston Long walked with the bases loaded.
Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the frame with four runs. Junior first baseman Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando) belted a two-run homer to key the rally.
The Rams added two runs in the second on a two-run blast by sophomore designated player Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke) to give the Rams a 6-1 advantage.
Long added an RBI-single in the fifth for the Bald Eagles to cut the lead to 6-2.
Shepherd added a pair of unearned runs in the fifth and Lock Haven got a two-run homer from Riley McClellan in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Davis and Seymour each had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
McClellan went 3-for-3 to lead the Bald Eagles
Junior pitcher Sarah Lamper (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 10 Ks, 7 BB) (8-3) gained the complete-game win. Madison Waltman (1.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (3-6) took the loss.
Sophomore outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) and sophomore catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central) each went 3-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs to lead a 16-hit attack in the nightcap for the Rams. Junior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) and Davis each added a pair of hits.
McClellan and Lestician each had two hits for the Bald Eagles.
Sophomore pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (5.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (8-3) went the distance for the win. Kinley Gioglio (2.2 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) (1-3) took the loss.
The two teams return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Lock Haven.
