WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Shepherd University (4-8) dropped a pair of games at The Spring Games in Florida on Tuesday. The Rams dropped a 3-2 decision to Pace (3-0) in an early game and fell in a 7-0 game to Saint Anselm (3-6) in a later contest.
Pace took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Alexa Borino reached on an error and later scored when Carolina Iturriaga was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.
Shepherd tied the game in the third when sophomore outfielder Elizabeth Padiotis (Aldie, Va./John Champe) led off with a walk and scored on a triple off the bat of senior pitcher/third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville).
Pace took a 2-1 lead in the fourth as Iturriaga singled and later scored on a single by Ariana Guarracino. Shepherd tied the game on an RBI-single by Purtell in the seventh.
Gwen Pederson reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to lift Pace to the win.
Gisselle Garcia (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 3 BB) (2-0) gained the win for Pace. Sophomore pitcher Kourtney McNatt (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink/WV Tech)(0.0 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (1-3) took the loss.
Sophomore infielder Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy) led off the seventh inning with a single to break up a no-hit bid by Haile Hicks in the later game.
Ava Caputo went 3-for-4, scored two runs, and drove in a pair of runs to lead Saint Anselm.
Hicks (7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 8 K, 2BB) (3-1) earned the win. Junior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (3.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (2-2) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they take on Saint Michael's at 12:15 p.m. and Post at 4:45 p.m.
