SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shippensburg (10-17, 5-4 PSAC East) swept Shepherd University (8-11-1, 3-5-1 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Raiders earned a 5-4 win in game one and added a 4-2 win in the nightcap.
Shippensburg took a 2-0 lead in the third inning in game one behind an RBI-ground out by Carter Hinds and an RBI-single by Ben Werkheiser.
Shepherd got a solo blast from senior outfielder Brennan Holmes (Ona, W.Va./Cabell Midland) in the third and another from junior third baseman Ryan Haddaway (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) in the fourth to tie the game.
Werkheiser added a two-run blast in the fifth to give the Raiders a 4-2 lead.
Haddaway added an RBI-single in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3.
Shippensburg added a run in the sixth when Lake Lloyd walked and later scored on a fielder's choice.
Shepherd score its final run in the seventh as freshman shortstop Gino Serechia (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) tripled and later scored on a wild pitch.
Werkheiser went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs for the Raiders.
Senior catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) and Haddaway each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Noah Nabholz (4.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (3-0) earned the win. Jackson Lobianco (2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) gained the save. Sophomore pitcher Chris Chaney (Falling Waters, W.Va./Saint James School/Maryland) (5.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 5 K, 3 BB) (1-4) took the loss.
Werkheiser went 3-for-4 and Lloyd went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead Shippensburg in the nightcap.
Junior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) paced the Rams with a 3-for-4 effort and a pair of runs batted in. He added a double and belted his eighth home run of the season. Doss added two hits.
Gabe Stotler (7.1 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 7 K, 3 BB) (2-4) earned the win for Shippensburg. Austen Labarre (1.2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB) picked up the save. Graduate student pitcher Austin Crebs (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic/Fairleigh Dickinson) (7.0 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) (1-3) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Bluefield State for a noon doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
