Shepherd Baseball Splits with Kutztown

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (9-12-1, 4-6-1 PSAC East) split with Kutztown (8-18, 3-8 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball action at Kutztown on Saturday. The Golden Bears earned a 5-4 win in game one while Shepherd gained the split with a 7-6 triumph in the nightcap. 

Kutztown took a 4-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap with a two-run triple by Ethan Martini keying the rally. 

Freshman shortstop Gino Serechia (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) belted a two-run blast in the third to cut the lead to 4-2. 

A sacrifice fly off the bat of junior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb)in the eighth trimmed the lead to 4-3. 

Brian Finn hit a solo homer in the bottom of the frame for the Golden Bears to up the lead to 5-3. 

The Rams took advantage of three hits, three walks and an error to plated four runs in the top of the ninth to gain the win. Sophomore catcher Peyton Mason (Knoxville, Md./Boonsboro/Wilson College) had an RBI-double and later scored to ignite the rally. 

The Golden Bears added a run in the ninth on an RBI-single by Finn. 

Senior catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) went 2-for-4 to lead the Rams. 

Finn went 4-for-4 to pace the Golden Bears.

Graduate student pitcher Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (2.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (2-0) picked up the win in relief. Dalton Geiger (1.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) (0-2) took the loss. 

Kutztown plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to gain a 5-4 win in game one. Jimmy Kerley was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to score Mike Kelly with the game-winner.

Serechia went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.

Kelly went 3-for-4 to lead the Golden Bears. 

Dominic Proietto (7.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 7 K, 1 BB) (3-2) earned the win for Kutztown.  Redshirt-senior pitcher Nick Trabacchi (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West/UMBC) (6.0 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 2 K, 4 BB) (2-4) took the loss. 

The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest at Fairfax Field.
