SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (12-14, 5-3 PSAC East) swept Lock Haven (11-14, 2-6 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Friday. The Rams gained a 7-0 win in game one and added a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as senior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville)walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of graduate student infielder Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier).
Shepherd added five runs in the fifth on a three-run double by Purtell and a two-run homer by junior outfielder Hannah Beeler.(Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim).
The Rams added a run in the sixth as sophomore catcher Olivia Reese (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) singled and later scored on a double steal.
Junior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (5.0 IP, 2 H, 6 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (6-3) gained the win. Madison Waltman (1.0 IP, 8 H, 9 R, 2 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (7-6) took the loss for Lock Haven.
Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the first in the nightcap with a two-run single by senior first baseman Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando) keying the rally.
The Rams added two more runs in the second on a two-run single off the bat of junior designated player Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke).
Lock Haven plated a pair of runs in the third on two hits and added a run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Mikayla Ruppert.
Purtell and Beeler each had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Sophomore pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 5 K, 4 BB) (3-7) earned the win. Kinley Gioglio (1.0 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (3-4) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Mansfield for a noon doubleheader.
