MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Shepherd (12-16-1, 7-10-1 PSAC East) dropped a doubleheader to 20th-ranked Millersville (29-8, 13-2 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. Millersville gained a 9-6 win in game one and held on for a 6-5 win in the nightcap.
Millersville scored three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth in game one to rally from a 6-1 deficit and take an 8-6 lead.
The Marauders added an insurance run in the seventh on a solo blast from Tommy Caulfield.
Senior catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) and graduate student outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic) each belted solo homers and had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Jimmy Losh, Tyler Wright, and Caulfield each had a pair of hits for Millersville.
Nate Young (4.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 6 K, 2 BB) (5-0) picked up the win in relief for the Marauders. Graduate student reliever Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (2.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (2-1) took the loss.
Millersville took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on a solo blast by Justin Taylor.
The Marauders added three in the fifth with a two-run single by Luke Trainer keying the rally.
Shepherd responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Senior catcher Andrew Edwards (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) and junior third baseman Ryan Haddaway (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) each had an RBI-single to highlight the scoring.
Junior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) belted a solo home run in the eighth to tie the game.
Millersville plated two runs in the ninth on RBI-singles by Keegan Soltis and Trainer.
Shepherd rallied with a run in the ninth as sophomore designated player Peyton Mason (Knoxville, Md./Boonsboro/Wilson College) walked with the bases loaded to score sophomore pinch-runner Trey Sine (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg). The Rams had the bases loaded with one out but were unable to add additional runs.
Haddaway went 3-for-4 to pace the Rams.
Bren Taylor went 4-for-4 to lead the Marauders.
Christian Wingard (1.0 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 3 BB) (4-0) gained the win for the Marauders. Sam Morris (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K, 2 BB) picked up the save. junior pitcher Tanner Dixon (Frederick, Md./Frederick) (3.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (1-2) took the loss for the Rams.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Ohio Dominican for a noon doubleheader.
