COLUMBUS, Ohio – Shepherd (13-17-1) split a doubleheader with Ohio Dominican (13-22) in baseball action at Ohio Dominican on Tuesday. Ohio Dominican rallied for a 5-4 win in game one and Shepherd used a 13-hit attack en route to a 19-6 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one as senior catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) hit a two-run double and later scored on an error.
Ohio Dominican answered back in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs. Gianni Passarell walked and scored when Michael Knapp reached on a fielder's choice. Knapp later scored on an error.
The Rams took a 4-2 lead in the second as senior infielder/outfielder Connor DeWees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) singled and later scored on a ground out by junior outfielder Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion).
The Panthers cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth as Jake Daniel singled and scored when Alex Brill reached on a fielder's choice.
Brill belted a two-run homer in the sixth to lift the Panthers to the win.
Graduate student infielder Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky), graduate student outfielder Daniel Keer (Lehighton, Pa./Marian Catholic), and Doss each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Daniel went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs for the Panthers.
Myles Martinez (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB) (4-0) gained the win for the Panthers. Derek Bolander (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 K, 1 BB) picked up the save. Sophomore pitcher Cameron Morales (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) (3.1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Rams.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on a two-run blast by Schwartz.
Ohio Dominican tied the game in the bottom of the first on a two-run double by Michael McFadden.
The Rams added four runs in the second inning. Doss had a two-run single, while Keer and Schwartz added RBI-singles.
Shepherd plated six runs in the third with a grand slam by junior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) highlighting the scoring.
The Rams added a pair of runs in the fourth and the Panthers added a run in the bottom of the frame on a solo blast by Lane Marshall to make it 14-3.
Shepherd added three runs in the fifth as sophomore infielder Donovan Garlock (McConnellsburg, Pa./McConnellsburg), sophomore outfielder Trey Sine (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg), and Daugherty each drove in a run when they walked with the bases loaded.
The Rams added a pair of runs in the sixth while ODU added two in the sixth and another in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Doss went 2-for-2 with three RBI and Schwartz went 2-for-3, scored three times, and drove in three runs to lead the Rams. Senior catcher Andrew Edwards (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) added a 1-for-2 outing with five runs scored.
Marshall went 2-for-4 for the Panthers.
Sophomore pitcher Daniel Keane (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) (4.0 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 6 K, 3 BB) (3-0) earned the win for the Rams. Chase Hunt (1.0 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 3 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Lock Haven for a 2 p.m. game at Fairfax Field.
