SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (10-12-1, 5-6-1 PSAC East) handed Kutztown (8-19, 3-9 PSAC East) a 7-1 setback in PSAC East baseball action at Fairfax Field on Sunday.
The Rams took a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a solo homer by freshman shortstop Gino Serechia (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) and an RBI-single by junior infielder Ryan Haddaway (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) keying the rally.
Shepherd added two runs in the third on a two-run double by graduate student second baseman Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky).
The Rams added a run in the fifth as sophomore designated hitter Peyton Mason (Knoxville, Md./Boonsboro/Wilson College) singled and later scored on a wild pitch to take a 6-0 advantage.
Kutztown scored a run in the seventh as Joey Pettinelli singled and later scored on a single off the bat of Gavin Moretski.
Shepherd scored its final run in the eighth on an RBI-single by senior catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland).
Doss went 3-for-5 and Serechia added a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
Mike Kelly went 3-for-4 to lead the Golden Bears.
Sophomore pitcher Daniel Keane (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) (3.0 IP. 2 H, 1 ER, 2 K 4 BB) (2-0) picked up the win for the Rams. Gavin Moretski (4.0 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 8 K, 3 BB) (2-6) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host West Chester for a 2 p.m. contest at Fairfax Field.
