Shepherd Softball Splits with Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shepherd University (7-11, 1-1 PSAC East) split with Shippensburg (13-11, 1-1 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at Sheippensburg on Saturday. The Raiders recorded an 8-1 win in game one and Shepherd posted a 3-2 win in the nightcap.

Shippensburg took a 1-0 lead in the third inning in the nightcap as Aryanna Briddell led off with a double and later scored on a single by Alyssa Nehlen.

Shepherd plated three runs on two hits and a pair of errors in the fourth. Senior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) had an RBI-triple and later scored on an error. Junior first baseman Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke) followed with a double and scored on an error.

Shippensburg added a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-double by Morgan Lindsay.

Junior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER,  1 K, 0 BB) (4-3) gained the complete game win. Shippensburg starter Emma Flattery (3.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) (4-2) took the loss.

Lindsay went 3-for-4 with a grand slam to lead a 17-hit attack for Shippensburg in game one. Hannah Marsteller added a two-run homer for the Raiders.

Purtell had an RBI-single in the fourth to drive in Shepherd's run.

Alicia Ball (7.0 IP, 8 H, 1 UER, 9 K, 3 BB) (5-3) gained the win. Sophomore pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (3.1 IP, 12 H, 7 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (2-5) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host #24 Seton Hill for a 1 p.m. doubleheader
