LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Shepherd (15-18-1, 9-11-1 PSAC East) swept Lock Haven (9-24, 2-15 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball action at Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon. The Rams posted a 6-5 win in game one and outslugged Lock Haven for a 13-12 win in 10 innings in the nightcap. The sweep allowed Shepherd head coach Matt McCarty to reach the 300-win milestone.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one. Junior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) blasted a two-run homer and senior infielder Connor DeWees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) added an RBI-double to key the rally.
After Lock Haven tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the frame, Shepherd took a 4-3 lead on an RBI-single by senior catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) in the second.
Shepherd added a run in the fourth as senior outfielder Brennan Holmes (Ona, W.Va./Cabell Midland) led off with a single and stole second and third. He scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior third baseman Ryan Haddaway (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville).
Lock Haven took advantage of one hit and a pair of Shepherd errors to tie the game with a pair of runs in the fourth.
Graduate student second baseman Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg/Western Kentucky) led off the seventh with a walk and later scored on a single by Mulhall.
Graduate student reliever Adam Miller (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB) (3-1) gained the win in relief. Garrett Starr (3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (0-2) took the loss for the Bald Eagles.
Lock Haven (20) and Shepherd (14) combined for 34 hits in the nightcap.
Sophomore outfielder Austin Ruzika-Porter (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) and senior catcher Andrew Edwards (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) each had RBI-singles in the top of the 10th to give the Rams a 13-11 lead.
Cameron Moors hit a double and scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th to make it a one-run game. Junior pitcher Aaron Snyder (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg/Canisius) enter the game and got the last two outs to secure the win.
Senior outfielder Tommy Gibson (Sicklerville, N.J./Williamstown/Penn State/Rowan College of South Jersey Gloucester) went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored and DeWees added a 3-for-5 effort with four runs scored and a pair of RBI. Gibson hit a two-run blast, while DeWees added a solo shot.
Moors went 4-for-6 to pace the Bald Eagles.
Sophomore pitcher Cameron Morales (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) (2.0 IP, 4 H, 8 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) (1-1) earned the win. Snyder (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) picked up the save. Aedan Walter (0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) (0-4) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Tiffin for a 1 p.m. doubleheader for Alumni Day.
