Shepherd Softball Splits with Millersville on Senior Day

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (16-18, 9-7 PSAC East) split a pair of games with Millersville (20-24, 8-8 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action on Senior Day at Sara Cree Field on Saturday. The Rams gained a 5-1 in game one, while the Marauders earned a 9-6 win in the nightcap. 

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one behind an RBI-single by junior catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central) and a two-run single by senior first baseman Tori Seymour (Winchester, Va./Sherando). 

The Rams added a run in the second on an RBI-single by graduate student infielder Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier). 

The Rams took a 5-0 lead in the sixth on an RBI-double by senior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville). 

The Marauders got a run in the seventh as Alexis Harkins doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Aleese Angelo. 

Purtell went 3-for-3 and Brown added a pair of hits for the Rams. 

Junior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K, 4 BB) (8-5) gained the win. Alex Schaefer (6.0 IP, 8 H,5 R, 3 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (9-9) took the loss for Millersville. 

Millersville used a 13-hit attack with three home runs to gain the win in the nightcap. 

Angelo went 3-for-5 with three RBI and Alyssa Stover added a 2-for-4 outing with three RBI for the Marauders. Alexia Harkins, Angelo, and Stover each hit home runs. 

Seymour went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs to lead Shepherd. 

Morgan Crutcher (6.0 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (9-10) gained the win for Millersville. Schaefer (1.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) earned the save. Sophomore pitcher Kourtney McNatt (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink/WV Tech) (1.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (3-5) took the loss. 

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Quakertown Pa. for the PSAC Tournament.
