EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Shepherd University (10-14, 3-3 PSAC East) dropped a doubleheader to East Stroudsburg (26-4, 3-3 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at East Stroudsburg on Saturday. East Stroudsburg recorded a 5-2 win in game one and added a 5-1 win in the nightcap.
After plating single runs in the first and third innings in game one, East Stroudsburg plated three runs in the fourth behind RBI-singles from Denva Shaw-Tait and Lexi Wright and an RBI-triple from Brooke McKeown.
Shepherd scored a pair of runs in the sixth as graduate student shortstop Ashley Burger (Hedgesville, W.Va./Spring Mills) doubled and scored on a triple off the bat of senior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville). Purtell scored when sophomore outfielder Chloee Burton (Maurertown, Va./Central) reached on a fielder's choice.
Katie Zaun (7.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 1 BB) (8-3) gained the win. Sophomore pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (5.0 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (2-7) took the loss..
East Stroudsburg took advantage of four hits and four errors to a 4-0 lead in the first inning in nightcap.
Shepherd scored a run in the fourth as junior outfielder Hannah Beeler.(Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) singled and later scored on a double by Burger.
East Stroudsburg added a run in the fifth on an RBI-single by Reilly Vicendese.
Paige Zigmunt (4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) (8-0) gained the win for the Warriors. Leigh Ann Jenkins (3.0 IP, 1 H 0 R, 4 K, 1 BB) picked up the save. Sophomore pitcher Kourtney McNatt (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink/WV Tech) (6.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (3-4) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Lock Haven for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Wednesday's doubleheader against Frostburg State has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts.
