NEWBERRY, S.C. – Shepherd (0-2) dropped a pair of games in baseball action at Newberry on Friday. The Rams dropped a 7-5 decision to Coker (3-6) in the first game and fell to host Newberry (6-2), 10-6, in the later contest.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Coker. Junior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) reached on an error and stole second base. He later scored on a double off the bat of redshirt-sophomore outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC).
The Rams added a run in the second as redshirt-sophomore infielder Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove/Frederick CC) doubled and later scored on a single by junior infielder Nicco German (Burke, Va./Falls Church).
Shepherd tacked on another run in the third as junior outfielder Corey Jamison (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) reached on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a single by Miles.
Senior infielder Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) led off the fourth with a single and later scored when Carter reached on a fielder's choice to give the Rams a 4-0 advantage.
Coker took advantage of a Shepherd throwing error to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Shepherd added a run in the seventh on an RBI-single by senior infielder Ryan Haddaway (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) to take a 5-2 lead
Coker rallied with five runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-5 victory. Ashby Vining had a two-run single to key the rally.
Daggers, Miles, and German each had two hits to lead an 11-hit attack for the Rams
Vining and Keaton Anderson each had a pair of hits for the Cobras.
Ethan Graham (4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) (1-0) gained the win. Cooper Thomas (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K, 0 BB) earned the save. Redshirt-freshman Oliver Leonard (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) (2.2 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
Trailing 2-1 in the second game, Shepherd plated four runs in the third inning to take a 5-2 lead. Senior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) hit a three-run homer to key the rally.
After Newberry added single runs in the third and fourth, the Rams took a 6-4 lead on a solo blast by Carter.
The Wolves added three runs in sixth, another in the seventh, and two more in the eighth to take a 10-6 win.
Mulhall and Carter had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Henry Gibson and Brody Winter each had three hits for the Wolves.
Bennett Roemer (6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 15 K, 2 BB) (1-0) gained the win for the Wolves. Senior pitcher Nate Hodgkinson (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) (1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Rams.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they face Coker at 4:30 p.m.
