LEESBURG, Fla. -- Shepherd University (7-3) gained a pair of wins in softball action at The Spring Games on Friday. The Rams gained a 6-5 win in nine innings in the early game against American International (0-1) and added an 12-9 triumph over Southern Connecticut State (0-2) in the later contest.
Graduate student third baseman
Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) scored the game-winning run on a bunt single by senior first baseman
Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke) in the ninth in the win over American International.
Freshman pitcher
Abby McBride (Northeast, Md./Rising Sun) (6.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 8 K, 0 BB) (1-1) picked up the win in game one. Alexis Jimenez (0-1) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
Purtell and Davis each went 3-for-5 and drove four runs to pace the Rams against Southern Connecticut State. All three of Davis' hits were doubles. Senior outfielder
Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) added a 3-for-4 effort.
Jacqueline Dumont went 4-for 4 for Southern Connecticut State.
Junior pitcher
Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (6.2 IP, 12 H, 9 R, 7 ER, 3 K, 7 BB) (4-0) earned the win for the Rams. Senior pitcher
Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) earned her second save of the season. Madison Shura (1.0 IP, 2H, 4 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Owls.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they face Minnesota Crookston at 2 p.m. and Southern Connecticut State at 4:30 p.m.
