STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Shepherd (9-6, 1-1 PSAC East) split with 18th-ranked East Stroudsburg (13-3, 1-1 PSAC East) in PSAC East doubleheader baseball action at East Stroudsburg on Sunday. The Warriors gained an 8-2 win in game one, while Shepherd earned the split with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap. A solo homer by graduate student third baseman Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) highlighted the scoring.
Senior infielder Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) belted a solo homer in the third, and senior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) smacked a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Rams a 6-0 advantage.
An RBI-single by redshirt-sophomore infielder Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove/Frederick CC) in the seventh gave the Rams a 7-0 lead.
Mike Kelly hit a two-run double in the seventh to help the Warriors avoid the shutout.
Redshirt-sophomore pitcher Trevor Sharp (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) (5.0 IP, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB) (2-0) gained the win. Brent Francisco (3.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) (4-1) took the loss for the Warriors.
After scoring a pair of runs in the first inning in game one, East Stroudsburg added three in the second on a three-run double by Matt Ervolina.
The Warriors added a pair of runs in the third behind RBI-singles from Cameron Hubbard and Ervolina.
After East Stroudsburg added a run in the fourth, Shepherd plated a pair of runs in the sixth. Redshirt-sophomore outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC) singled and later scored on a single by graduate student third baseman Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion). Shepherd's other tally came when graduate student catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) reached on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a passed ball.
Ervolina went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs for the Warriors.
Junior infielder Nicco German (Burke, Va./Falls Church) went 2-for-4 to lead the Rams.
Chase Nowak (5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 5 K, 3 BB) (4-1) gained the win. Junior pitcher Chris Chaney (Falling Waters, W.Va./Saint James School/Maryland) (2.0 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) (1-1) took the loss.
The Rams are slated to return to action on Tuesday when they host West Liberty for a noon doubleheader.
