SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd (11-6) swept West Liberty (4-10) in doubleheader baseball action at Fairfax Field on Wednesday. The Rams rallied for a 4-3 win in eight innings in game one and added a 9-4 triumph in the nightcap.
Graduate student catcher Andrew Edwards (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) smacked a first-pitch, walk-off homer in the eighth to lift the Rams to the game one victory.
Trailing 3-1, Shepherd plated two runs on no hits in the seventh to force the extra inning. The Rams took advantage of three Hilltopper errors.
Senior pitcher Nate Hodgkinson (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (2-1) picked up the win for the Rams. Trevor Thomas (0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (1-1) took the loss for the Hilltoppers.
Trailing 2-0, the Rams plated nine runs on five hits in the fifth inning in the nightcap en route to a 9-4 win. Junior infielder Nicco German (Burke, Va./Falls Church) hit a two-run double, junior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) smacked a three-run double, and redshirt-sophomore outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC) added a two-run double to key the big inning.
West Liberty added a pair of runs in the seventh on a two-run single by Kyle McGee.
Daggers and German each had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Redshirt-sophomore pitcher Cameron Morales (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) (1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 K, 1 BB) (1-0) gained the win. Drake Dobson (1.0 IP, 1 H, 3 ER, 0 K, 1 BB) (1-3) took the loss for West Liberty.
The Rams are slated to return to action on Friday when they travel to Corning (NY) Community College to face Mansfield for a 2 p.m. game.
