SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (13-6, 3-1 PSAC East) swept Mansfield (5-10, 0-4 PSAC East) in PSAC East doubleheader baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. The Rams gained a 9-8 win in game one and added a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
The Rams scored eight runs in the fourth inning en route to the game one win. Graduate student catcher Andrew Edwards (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) belted a grand slam, junior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) added a solo blast, and graduate student third baseman Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) smacked a three-run homer to highlight the rally.
Senior infielder Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion), junior outfielder Corey Jamison (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport), and senior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) each had a pair of hits to lead a 10-hit attack for the Rams.
Jeffrey Coakley and Jacob Houtz each had two hits for Mansfield.
Redshirt-sophomore pitcher Trevor Sharp (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) (4.1 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 6 K, 3 BB) (3-0) picked up the win. Redshirt freshman pitcher Nate Mikulski (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 K, 0 BB) earned the save. Austin Lewis (3.0 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (2-2) took the loss for the Mountaineers.
Trailing 3-2 in the nightcap, Shepherd plated a pair of runs in the third and held on for the win. Daugherty led off with a homer and redshirt-sophomore outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC) followed with a double. Daggers went to third on a fly out by Mulhall, and scored when junior infielder Nicco German (Burke, Va./Falls Church) grounded out.
Daggers had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Zachary Shertzer and Ryan Scott each had two hits for the Mountaineers.
Junior pitcher Chris Chaney (Falling Waters, W.Va./Saint James School/Maryland) (5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 7 K, 2 BB) (2-1) picked up the win. Senior pitcher Nate Hodgkinson (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) (1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB) gained the save. Ryan King (5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Mountaineers.
The Rams are slated to return to action on Monday when they host East Stroudsburg for a 2 p.m. contest.
