EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- Shepherd University (23-17, 6-14 PSAC East) dropped a pair of games to East Stroudsburg (26-12, 14-6 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at East Stroudsburg on Friday. Shepherd dropped a 4-2 decision in game one and came up short on an 8-5 decision in the nightcap.
East Stroudsburg took a 2-0 lead in the second inning in game one as Abigail Weirich hit a solo homer and Denva Shaw-Tait singled and later scored on an error.
Shepherd tied the game in the sixth as senior outfielder Kylie Condon (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) smacked a two-run triple.
The Warriors plated a pair of runs in the sixth to gain the win. Weidrich drove in a run when she walked with the bases loaded and Shaw-Tait added a sacrifice fly.
Graduate student third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) went 2-for-2 to pace the Rams.
Molly Nies went 2-for-3 for the Warriors.
Paige Zigmunt (7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (14-3) gained the win. Junior pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (8-2) took the loss.
The Rams took a 2-0 lead in the first in the nightcap behind a two-run double by Condon.
The Warriors took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first as Weirich hits a two-run double and an RBI-single by Shaw-Tait.
Purtell smacked a two-run double in the second to give the Rams a 4-3 advantage.
Purtell added a sacrifice fly in the fourth to up the Shepherd lead to 5-3.
East Stroudsburg scored five runs on six hits in the sixth to rally for the win. Brooke McKeown hit a two-run single to fuel the rally.
Junior second baseman Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy) and Beeler each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Reilly Vicendese and Katherine Donaghue had two hits apiece for the Warriors.
Maddie Pritchard (3.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) (5-2) gained the win. Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (5.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 0 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (8-7) took the loss for the Rams.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they travel to Bloomsburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The games were pushed back a day due to weather concerns.
