SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University (24-20, 7-17 PSAC East) dropped a pair of games to Kutztown (20-17, 14-7 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Tuesday. Kutztown gained a 9-1 win in six innings in game one and added a 7-6 win in eight innings in the nightcap.
Kutztown took a 3-0 lead in the second inning in game one. Alexa Stevens hit a two-run double to key the rally.
Brianna Hughes hit a two-run homer in the third and added a two-run double in the fifth to give the Golden Bears a 7-0 advantage.
Kutztown plated a pair of runs in the sixth to take a 9-0 lead.
Shepherd scored in the sixth as graduate student third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) led off with a single and moved to second on a single by senior outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim). Junior second baseman Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy) singled to score Purtell.
Purtell went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Hughes went 3-for-3 for the Golden Bears.
Haley Gravich (6.0 IP, 6 H 1 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (12-5) got the win. Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (4.2 IP, 6 H,7 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (9-9) took the loss.
Kutztown took a 4-0 lead in the first in the nightcap. Sarah Harvat had a two-run double to key the rally.
Shepherd got a run in the second as Donnelly led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville).
The Golden Bears added a pair of runs in the third to take a 6-1 lead as Kristin Geesey and Gravish each drove in a run.
Shepherd scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-5. Freshman catcher Camdyn Noland (Summit Point, W.Va./Washington) hit a two-run double to key the rally.
The Rams tied the game in the fifth as Beeler led off with a single and advanced to third on a two-base error. Junior pinch-hitter Elizabeth Padiotis (Aldie, Va./John Champe) singled to plate Beeler.
Stevens hit a solo homer in the eighth to lift Kutztown to the win.
Sophomore infielder Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.
Gravish (4.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (13-5) gained the win in relief. Junior pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (8-3) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to Mansfield for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
