MANSFIELD, Pa. -- Shepherd University (26-20, 9-17 PSAC East) swept Mansfield (10-28, 1-25 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Mansfield on Friday. Shepherd gained a 13-1 win in five innings in game one and added an 8-0 win in five innings in the nightcap. Graduate student third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) had five hits on the day and set Shepherd records for most hits in a season (72) and most hits in a career (262). She broke the old marks of 71 (set by Kaitlyn Konopka, 2017) and 260 (set by Konopka, 2016-19).
Shepherd took a 5-0 lead in the first inning in game one. Sophomore infielder Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) hit a two-run double to key the rally.
Anastastia Berardi hit an RBI-single for the Mountaineers in the bottom of the first.
Shepherd added two runs in the second on an RBI-single by junior second baseman Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy) and an RBI-triple from junior outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville).
The Rams tacked on three runs in the third behind RBI-singles from graduate student third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville), senior outfielder Kylie Condon (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington), and senior outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim).
Shepherd completed the scoring in the fourth with three runs on a sacrifice fly by Purtell and a two-run double by Condon.
Purtell and Beeler each had three hits to lead the Rams.
Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (3.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (10-9) gained the win. Danielle Goff (3.0 IP, 13 H, 10 ER, 1 K, 4 BB) (5-14) took the loss.
Shepherd scored three runs in the first in the nightcap to take a 3-0 lead.
The Rams added five runs in the fourth with a two-run single by Donnelly sparking the rally
Junior pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K, 0 BB) (9-3) gained the win. Annabella Putnam (5.0 IP 10 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 K, 3 BB) (4-12) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host Lock Haven for a noon doubleheader for Senior Day.
