BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Shepherd University (24-16) had 32 hits on the day en route to a sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan (8-29) in non-conference doubleheader baseball action at West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday. The Rams gained a 17-1 win in game one and added a 10-1 victory in the nightcap.
Clinging to a 3-1 lead, Shepherd plated three runs in the fifth in game one to take a 6-1 advantage. Junior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) drove in a run and scored another to key the rally.
The Rams added three runs in the sixth as redshirt-sophomore outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC) and graduate student catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) each had RBI-singles, while Carter added an RBI-double.
Shepherd closed out the scoring with eight runs in the seventh. Doss had a bases-clearing single and senior shortstop Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) added a two-run blast to highlight the scoring outburst.
Senior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) went 4-for-5 and Doss added a 3-for-5 effort to lead a 17-hit attack for the Rams.
Thatcher Poteat had a pair of hits for the Bobcats.
Redshirt-sophomore pitcher John Cummings (Atglen, Pa./Octorara Area/Frederick Community College) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) (3-0) picked up the win for the Rams. Anthony Hernandez (3.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 5 K, 3 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Bobcats.
After scoring single runs in the first four innings in the nightcap, Shepherd plated six runs on five hits in the fifth to take a 10-1 lead. Daggers smacked a two-run double and graduate student third baseman Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) added an RBI-double to spark the rally.
Daggers went 4-for-4 to pace the Rams.
Redshirt-sophomore Eli Lam (Elkton, Va./Spotswood/Patrick Henry Community College) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 1 BB) (3-0) earned the win for the Rams. Luke White (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 0 K, 5 BB) (0-2) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Millersville for a 2 p.m. contest.
