Shepherd Baseball Falls to #8/13 Millersville

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (24-17, 7-12 PSAC East) dropped a 20-13 decision to #8/13 Millersville (32-6, 14-2 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball action at Fairfax Field on Friday afternoon. 

After Millersville grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Shepherd answered back with four runs in the bottom of the inning. A two-run single by graduate student catcher Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland) keyed the rally. 

Millersville tied the game in the third behind an RBI-double by Bren Taylor and an RBI-single from Thomas Caufield. 

The Rams got a two-run homer from graduate student third baseman Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and an RBI-single from Doss in the bottom of the third to take a 7-4 lead. 

The Marauders added a pair of runs in the fourth and then scored five runs in the fifth to take a 10-7 advantage. A two-run single by Jimmy Losh fueled the rally. 

Shepherd rallied with two runs in the fifth and then tied the game in the sixth when Dewees led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. 

Millersville got an RBI-double from Keegan Soltis in the seventh to take an 11-10 lead. 

The Marauders added seven runs on four hits in the eighth to grab an 18-10 lead. Chase Simmons had a two-run double and Cole Houser added a two-run single to ignite the rally. 

After Millersville added two runs in the top of the ninth, Shepherd wrapped up the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Graduate student catcher Andrew Edwards (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) belted a two-run blast and senior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) added an RBI-single. 

Mulhall went 4-for-6 to lead the Rams. 

Caufield went 3-for-5 to pace the Marauders. 

Colby Gromlich (2.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (3-0) picked up the win. Nate Young (3.1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 7 K, 0 BB) notched the save. Freshman pitcher Brayden Stottlemeyer (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (2.0 IP, 1 H, 3 ER, 1 K, 4 BB) (1-2) took the loss for the Rams.                                                                                        

The two teams are slated to return to action on Sunday for a noon doubleheader at Millersville. The games were pushed back a day due to weather concerns.
