SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University (19-9, 4-6 PSAC East) Mansfield (9-13, 0-10 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at Sara Cree Field on Sunday. The Rams gained a 7-0 win in game one and added an 18-2 triumph in five innings in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the first inning in game one with a three-run homer by freshman first baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) keying the rally.
The Rams added a pair of runs in the second. Graduate student third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) doubled and scored on a double by senior outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim). Beeler later scored on a double-steal.
Shepherd completed the scoring in the third as senior designated player Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke) reached on an error and scored on a double off the bat of junior outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville).
Beeler and Forte each went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 K, 0 BB) (7-4) gained the win for the Rams. Junior pitcher Kourtney McNatt (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink/WV Tech) (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0K, 1 BB) worked the final inning. Danielle Goff (6.0 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (5-5) took the loss.
Mansfield took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap as Kayla Vonstein singled and Kaelyn Watson followed with a walk. Vonstein scored on a single by Gabby Drum and Watson later scored when Morgan Berndt reached on a fielder's choice.
Shepherd plated 18 runs on 14 hits and four errors in the second. Senior outfielder Kylie Condon (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) and Forte each smacked two-run triples to key the rally.
Purtell went 4-for-5 with three runs batted in and a pair of runs scored to lead a 21-hit attack for the Rams. Sophomore shortstop Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) and Moore each added three hits.
Junior pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (6-1) gained the win. Graduate student pitcher Sarah Lamper (Marshall, Va./Fauquier) pitched hitless ball over the final two innings and fanned three. Annabella Putnam (3.2 IP, 13 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (3-6) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to Lock Haven for a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader.
