SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University (21-11) swept a pair of games with Frostburg State (21-12) in non-conference softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Wednesday. Shepherd posted a 2-1 win in game one and added a 10-2 win in six innings in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as graduate student third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) singled and later scored on a single off the bat of senior outfielder Kylie Condon (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington).
The Bobcats tied the game in the second as Arden Miller reached on an error and later scored from third right before Adriana Wimmer got caught in a rundown between first and second.
Shepherd scored the game-winner in the third. Purtell reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. She later scored when senior outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) reached on an error.
Condon went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Freshman pitcher Abby McBride (Northeast, Md./Rising Sun) (7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 K, 3 BB) (5-3) gained the complete game win for the Rams. Sydney Theobald (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) (7-6) took the loss.
The Rams used a 12-hit attack en route to a 10-2 win in the nightcap.
Frostburg State took a 2-0 lead in the first behind a sacrifice fly by Briana Powell and an RBI-single by Ryan Darling.
Shepherd rallied with three runs in the bottom of the first. A two-run double by junior outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) keyed the rally.
The Rams took a 5-2 lead in the second behind a sacrifice fly by Beeler and an RBI-double by Condon.
Shepherd added a run in the fourth on an RBI-double by Condon.
The Rams added two runs in the fifth. Freshman first baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) singled and later scored when senior catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central) reached on an error. Junior designated player/outfielder Elizabeth Padiotis (Aldie, Va./John Champe) reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Purtell.
The Rams tacked on two runs in the sixth. Condon singled and moved to second on a single by sophomore shortstop Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline). Condon and Clatterbuck moved up on a double steal and Condon scored from third on a throwing error. Clatterbuck scored on a single by Moore.
Condon was 3-for-3 and Clatterbuck was 3-for-4 to pace the Rams.
Junior pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 K, 4 BB) (7-1) gained the victory. Ashlynn Routzahn (1.0 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 0 K, 3 BB) (2-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Millersville for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
