SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (19-14, 6-9 PSAC East) dropped a doubleheader to Kutztown (20-12, 7-5 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball action at Fairfax Field on Saturday. Kutztown gained a 9-7 win in game one and added a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.
Kutztown scored a run in the first in game one and added four more in the second to take a 5-0 advantage.
Shepherd rallied to tie the game in the third as redshirt-sophomore second baseman Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove/Frederick CC) hit a solo blast and junior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) belted a grand slam to tie the game at 5-5.
The Golden Bears got a grand slam from Jimmy Kerley in the fourth to take a 9-5 lead.
Shepherd completed the scoring in the seventh on a two-run homer by senior infielder Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion).
Daugherty and Miles each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Ethan Martini went 3-for-4 to lead the Golden Bears.
Dominic Proietto (5.0 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 8 K, 1 BB) (5-1) gained the win. Freshman pitcher Brayden Stottlemeyer (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (3.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 6 K, 3 BB) (1-1) took the loss.
Kutztown took a 3-0 lead in the nightcap in the third. Antonio Rossillo and Gavin Moretski each had RBI-doubles to key the rally.
Shepherd got a run in the third as Daughtery reached on an infield single and later scored on a single off the bat of senior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb).
Daugherty belted a three-run homer in the fourth to give the Rams a 4-3 advantage.
Kutztown tied the game in the sixth on an RBI-single by Joey Pettinelli. Pettinelli later scored the game-winner when he scored from third on a wild pitch.
Daugherty and Miles each had three hits for the Rams.
Zach Male (7.0 IP, 9 H, 4 Er, 5 K, 3 BB) (1-2) gained the win. Dalton Geiger (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB) earned the save. Freshman pitcher Allen Miller (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) (8.0 IP 7 H, 5 ER, 6 K, 3 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Bloomfield for a 1 p.m. doubleheader
