WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Shepherd University (6-4) gained a pair of wins in softball action at The Spring Games on Monday. The Rams recorded a 3-0 win with Bentley (3-6) in an early game and added a 3-0 triumph over Quincy (10-10) in the later contest.
The Rams used a big inning and stellar pitching to pick up the win against Bentley.
Freshman pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) led off the third and reached on a walk and was replaced by senior pinch runner Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick). Junior shortstop Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) followed with a single. The pair advanced on a sacrifice bunt by senior second baseman Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy) and graduate student catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central) followed with a three-run blast to left.
Ruffner gained the win (7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 11 K, 2 BB) to improve to 4-0. Taylor O'Brien (3.0 IP, 3 ER, 0 K, 3 BB) (0-2) took the loss for Bentley.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the fourth against Quincy as Donnelly led off with a single and was replaced by sophomore pinch-runner Sydney Martin-Gonciarz (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson/Morgan State). Mantz followed with a single to move Martin-Gonciarz to third. Martin-Gonciarz scored when freshman first baseman Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) reached on a fielder's choice
The Rams added a pair of runs in the sixth behind a two-run single by freshman pinch-hitter Trynda Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central).
Alex Mantz went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams.
Senior pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 5 K, 1 BB)(2-1) picked up the victory. Abbey Hultz (6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (5-4) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they face Saint Michael's at 2:45 p.m. and Lewis at 5 p.m. at The Spring Games.
