Shepherd Softball Splits Pair at The Spring Games; Ruffner Sets Strikeout Mark

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Shepherd University (10-8) swept a pair of games in softball action at The Spring Games on Saturday. The Rams recorded a 6-2 win over Northern State (13-6) in the early game and dropped a 7-6 decision in eight innings to Hillsdale in a later contest. Freshman pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) struck out 16 batters against Northern State to a Shepherd single game mark. She breaks the old record of 15 set by Nichole Pitcock against West Chester on Feb. 26, 2011.

Northern State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo homer by Kyra Knudtson.

Shepherd tied the game in the bottom of the inning as senior second baseman Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy) walked and later scored on a single by freshman pitcher Madelayne Ruffner.

The Rams took a 3-1 lead in the fourth behind RBI-singles by freshman first baseman Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) and junior outfielder Lauren Alt (Upper Tract, W.Va./Petersburg).

Shepherd added two runs in the fifth as junior infielder Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) and Collis each had run-scoring singles.

Northern State added a run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Knudtson.

Shepherd completed the scoring in the bottom of the sixth as senior outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) reached on an error and scored on a single by graduate student catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central).

Mantz went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams.

Ruffner (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 16 K, 1 BB) (7-0) earned the complete game win. McKenzie Wanner (4.2 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (4-2) took the loss.

Hillsdale took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in the later game behind a solo homer by Hailey Holtman and a two-run single by Taylor Lewis.

Shepherd got a run in the third when Clatterbuck singled and scored on a ground out by senior outfielder Olivia Reese (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial).

After Hillsdale added a run in the second, Shepherd plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 4-4. A sacrifice fly by Clatterbuck and a run-scoring single by Collis highlighted the rally.

Hillsdale scored a pair of unearned runs in the third to take a 6-4 lead.

Shepherd got a two-run single from junior second baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene) in the fourth.

Hillsdale scored the game-winner as Emma Sather was placed on second due to the tiebreaker rule. She later scored on a single by Holtman.

Moore went 3-for-3 to lead the Rams

Joni Russell (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 K, 1 BB) (7-3) earned the win for Hillsdale. Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (0-3) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Shippensburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
