Shepherd Softball Splits Pair with Shippensburg; Ruffner Reaches 100 Strikeouts
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (11-9, 1-1 PSAC East) split a doubleheader with Shippensburg in PSAC East softball action at Sara Cree Field on Tuesday. Graduate student catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central) belted a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Rams to a 3-2 win in game one, while Shippensburg gained a split with a 14-5 victory in the nightcap. Freshman pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) struck out 10 batters in game one and reached 100 strikeouts for her career.
Shippensburg took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one on a solo homer by Sarah Sabocsik.
Shepherd tied the game in the third as junior third baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene) reached on an error and later scored on a ground out by Mantz.
The Raiders took a 2-1 lead on a solo blast to left by Maelynn Leber in the fourth.
The Rams tied the game in the sixth as Ruffner led off with a single and later scored on a single off the bat of Moore to set the stage for the game-winning heroics by Mantz.\
Junior shortstop Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) and Moore each had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Caitly Martell and Sabocsik each had two hits for the Raiders.
Ruffner (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 10 K, 1 BB) (8-0) earned the complete game win. Shippensburg reliever Katelyn Minney (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 K, 0 BB) (3-1) took the loss.
Shippensburg used a 14-hit attack to gain a 14-5 win in the nightcap.
The Raiders took a 5-0 lead in the first with a three-run homer by Morgan Lindsay keying the scoring.
Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the first on a two-run blast by sophomore outfielder Camdyn Noland (Summit Point, W.Va./Washington).
Shippensburg took a 6-2 lead on a solo homer by Sabocsik in the second.
The Raiders plated six runs on four hits and three errors in the third to take a commanding 12-2 lead.
Lindsay and Sabocsik each had three hits for the Raiders.
Noland went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs to lead the Rams.
Madalyn Dyer (3.0 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) (3-0) earned the win for Shippensburg. Freshman pitcher Trynda Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central) (2.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (1-2) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to East Stroudsburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
